Stratasys Ltd. and Limbitless Solutions have expanded their technical partnership to scale the production of pediatric bionic prosthetics using industrial additive manufacturing systems. The initiative focuses on fabricating end-use prosthetic components, tooling, and rapid prototyping workflows at the University of Central Florida research facility.
Technical Collaboration and Division of Responsibilities
The development of functional, child-specific prosthetics requires high dimensional accuracy, low-volume customization, and lightweight materials. Limbitless Solutions leads the interdisciplinary design, clinical alignment, and mechanical validation of the assistive devices. Stratasys provides industrial-grade additive manufacturing hardware, specialized materials, engineering advisory support, and equipment maintenance.
Within the manufacturing workflow, additive technologies fulfill three distinct functions:
- Direct fabrication of functional end-use mechanical components for bionic arms.
- Additive manufacturing of tooling and molds used for thermoforming cosmetic outer shells.
- Rapid functional prototyping to validate kinematics and fit prior to secondary manufacturing processes, such as injection molding.
Equipment Integration and Circular Manufacturing Implementation
The technical infrastructure at the dedicated Limbitless Solutions laboratory includes multiple Stratasys extrusion systems. To integrate circular manufacturing practices into the production cycle, Stratasys deployed a factory-refurbished Certified Pre-Owned industrial 3D printer.
The refurbishment program validates hardware tolerances, replaces mechanical wear items, and recalibrates motion controllers to OEM specifications. This deployment provides the operational precision required for prosthetic assembly while extending the operational lifecycle of industrial capital equipment and reducing electronic and mechanical waste.
Operational Impact and Educational Integration
Integrating digital manufacturing reduces the design-to-delivery lead time for custom bionics compared to conventional subtractive machining. The direct production of customized parts eliminates specialized hard tooling costs for single-unit variations, accommodating patient growth and anatomical differences.
Simultaneously, the platform serves as an operational training environment for engineering and design students at the University of Central Florida. Technical personnel and students utilize the equipment to optimize build orientations, analyze part isotropic behavior under cyclic mechanical loads, and standardize quality control processes for additive orthotics and prosthetics.
"By reconditioning high-performing equipment through our Certified Pre-Owned program, we not only reduce waste but also enable purpose-driven organizations like Limbitless to extend their reach and empower more lives," stated Rosa Coblens, VP Sustainability & Communications at Stratasys.
"What started as a short phone call while I was in graduate school turned into a decade-long partnership that shows how additive manufacturing can create a tangible impact for the children we serve and the future engineers and designers working to build a more accessible world," stated Albert Manero, PhD, Executive Director and Co-founder of Limbitless Solutions.
Through standardized material deposition, rapid iteration loops, and hardware redeployment, the technical collaboration maintains an ongoing pipeline for individualized biomedical devices.
