Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS (Gemelli University Hospital) in Rome, Italy. The agreement creates a collaborative framework to develop next-generation healthcare solutions combining medical robotics and digital transformation technologies, executed in cooperation with the Kawasaki Innovation Centre Europe SAS (KIC-EU) based in Strasbourg, France.

Context of the Cooperation
Healthcare systems worldwide face compounding operational challenges driven by aging demographics, clinical staffing shortages, and increasing administrative complexity. Hospitals require integrated automation and digital workflows to alleviate routine logistical burdens on medical staff, enhance surgical precision, and improve patient flow without compromising clinical excellence.

To address these healthcare delivery challenges, cooperation was established between industrial technology and robotics provider Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Gemelli University Hospital, one of Europe's largest academic medical centers. The initiative marks KIC-EU's first formal partnership with a European healthcare institution since the innovation facility commenced operations in March 2026 under Kawasaki’s "Co-Creating the Future of Healthcare" vision. The alliance bridges Kawasaki's multi-domain robotics portfolio with Gemelli University Hospital’s large-scale clinical environment and medical research capabilities.

Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The partnership establishes a co-creation model to explore, develop, and validate integrated "one-stop solutions" within active hospital environments. Responsibilities are allocated between the technology developer and the medical institution:

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (via KIC-EU) contributes its hardware and software robotics ecosystem, including the hinotori™ surgical robot system, Nyokkey semi-humanoid robot, FORRO indoor delivery robot, and “mapxus Driven by Kawasaki” indoor/outdoor positioning system, alongside AI and remote technologies.

Gemelli University Hospital provides clinical expertise, field validation environments, healthcare workflow data, and potential hospital facilities to host a permanent joint development hub.

At a system level, the collaboration aims to unite distinct robotic platforms into an integrated operational architecture across the hospital. Surgical robotics operate in procedural suites, while autonomous mobile delivery units and semi-humanoid systems interface with spatial positioning engines to automate internal logistics, sample distribution, and service workflows. By linking these physical robotic assets with AI-driven monitoring and remote operational interfaces, the architecture targets systemic efficiency improvements across hospital administration and care delivery.

Deployment or Implementation
The implementation strategy follows an iterative lifecycle combining field deployment, proof-of-concept testing, clinical feedback, and technological refinement directly within hospital operations.

Under the MOU, Kawasaki and Gemelli University Hospital are evaluating the establishment of a permanent joint development hub inside the hospital in Rome. This dedicated facility will anchor future proof-of-concept trials and clinical validation activities, enabling engineering teams to co-develop solutions alongside doctors and nursing staff. Through this continuous development-and-validation cycle, the initiative seeks to transition robotics and digital healthcare prototypes from research concepts into practical, socially implemented hospital systems.
