Materialise Adds PEEK Implants to CMF Portfolio
Materialise's new personalized PEEK CMF implant

In cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery, implant material selection influences imaging compatibility, load-bearing performance and long-term anatomical reconstruction. Materialise NV has expanded its CMF portfolio by introducing custom-made polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants, providing surgeons with an additional patient-specific option alongside its established titanium solutions.

The new PEEK implants are integrated into Materialise’s existing digital planning and case management framework, allowing surgeons to select implant material without changing workflow, planning tools or manufacturing processes.

Integrated digital workflow for personalized reconstruction
The PEEK implants are incorporated into Materialise’s CMF ecosystem, which includes collaborative 3D surgical planning using Mimics Enlight CMF software, case coordination through Mimics Flow and fixation with Materialise Standard+ Solutions.

Clinical engineers collaborate with surgeons during the planning phase to design each implant based on patient-specific anatomical data. The introduction of PEEK does not alter this process; instead, it extends material selection within the same validated and traceable workflow. This continuity supports regulatory compliance and procedural consistency across different implant materials.

Material selection for diverse clinical indications
PEEK is radiolucent, which enables artifact-free postoperative imaging. In cranial reconstruction, facial contour restoration and onlay procedures, this property can facilitate clearer follow-up assessments compared with metallic implants.

Titanium remains widely used for load-bearing CMF applications due to its mechanical strength and long-term clinical history. By offering both titanium and PEEK within the same platform, Materialise provides material flexibility while maintaining standardized digital planning and production processes.

This dual-material portfolio allows surgeons to align implant selection with clinical requirements, whether prioritizing structural strength or imaging clarity.

Manufacturing, quality control and delivery timelines
Each custom-made PEEK implant is manufactured in Europe by Ad Mirabiles under an EN ISO 13485-certified quality management system. The manufacturing process is designed to ensure dimensional accuracy and reproducibility across cases.

Materialise specifies a 72-hour turnaround time for PEEK implants following surgical plan approval, aligning delivery expectations with its titanium implant services. This timeline supports surgical scheduling and minimizes delays between planning and implantation.

Availability in European CMF markets
The custom-made PEEK implants are available to surgeons across Europe, excluding Switzerland, where Materialise CMF solutions are already established. The portfolio expansion strengthens material choice in patient-specific CMF reconstruction while preserving a unified digital workflow and partner structure for surgical teams.
